President Terry Curtis conducted the meeting of the ALFCA Board of Directors on Thursday, January 25th at 10:00 AM at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Montgomery. Coach Curtis opened the meeting by giving the board an update on executive director Jack Wood and his recovery from a mild stroke. Vice President Jere Adcock led a prayer for Coach Wood and several other coaches who are having health issues.
Coach Curtis covered the convention agenda and went back over those members of the board who are responsible for introducing speakers at the convention. He reminded board members to go by and see and thank our sponsors. The social will be at the Embassy Suites after Coach Saban and Coach Scott Cochran of Alabama are through with their presentation.
Coach Curtis announced that the helmets grants of $2500 were awarded this year to Red Level, Wadley, Florala and Horseshoe Bend. The grants could be used for reconditioning or for new helmets. He stated that ALFCA sponsor Schutt works a nice deal with the schools if they want new helmets.
Executive secretary Jennifer Byrd and Coach Curtis then covered the banquet agenda. The banquet is scheduled to be the biggest ever, and all of the awards have already arrived. Herb Winches will be at banquet to explain the scholarship procedure.
Coach Curtis gave a sponsor update. He said that Coach Wood stated last week that once the association paid expenses of the convention it would be debt free and on firm foundation footing. Discussions continue about securing a new title sponsor since the loss of Russell Athletic, which will take place next year. Coach Curtis said that Coach wood would have an announcement about that in the future.
The board discussed organization for the General Assembly meeting on Friday afternoon. District elections were to be held for board members in Districts 1,3,5,and 7. The assistant coach positions were to be elected from Districts 3 and 7.
The board then had a discussion about the NCAA Summer camp issue not coinciding with the AHSAA competition dates for football. They discussed possible solutions. Then the board discussed a proposal brought by Coach Curtis where all transfers from ninth grade and higher be ineligible unless the school they left from signs off on the transfer. After much discussion the board decided to bring the proposals to the general assembly and get their opinions before decided whether or not to send the proposals to the AHSAA and back them. All proposals must be sent by a school.
There being no other discussion the board adjourned to Dreamland BBQ for lunch provided by the Montgomery Sports Commission.
