Cullman Head football coach Mark Britton has announced his retirement after having been diagnosed with kidney cancer. Britton, who has been the Cullman head coach since 2001, has never had a losing season at the school and has gathered three ten win seasons. His Bearcat squad made back to back trips to the semi finals in 2007 and 2008.
Cullman High School issued the following statement:
“Due to the nature of his condition, Coach Britton will need to follow his doctor’s orders at this time and take care of himself through this process. He will undergo surgery once his medical team completes the scheduling process. At this point, the cancer is contained in the kidney and he will require no additional chemotherapy or radiation treatments. We ask that you respect the privacy of Coach Britton, Mrs. Patti and their family at this time. ”
Britton said he was unsure of whether he would finish the season. “That will depend on when my surgery is scheduled,” he said. A graduate of Cullman High School, Coach Britton has spent 27 of his 30 year career in education with the Bearcats. He had a highly successful tenure as Cullman baseball coach before becoming head football coach. He is the winningest coach in Cullman football history and is a member of the Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame.
