MONTGOMERY – Jackson High School senior defensive back Keegan Chapman provided the heroics scoring two highlight reel touchdowns as the Aggies (4-1) downed previously unbeaten Mobile Christian 42-14 in a key Class 4A, Region 1 battle to earn this week’s AHSAA Football Spotlight for Week 4 of the 2025 season.

The North Carolina commitment’s defensive performance came on a weekend where offense and special  teams took the center stage at a large number of games.

Chapman scored two key touchdowns for Jackson – first on a 78-yard interception return and next on a 96-yard free kick return after the Jackson special team blocked a punt out of the end zone for a safety.

Chapman’s effort edged out a superb passing performance by Coosa Christian quarterback Mac Long and two strong kickers, Santiago Diaz of Valley High School and Grant Thompson of Fairhope High School.

Chapman finished the night with 241 total all-purpose yards and two TDs, and a 66-yard kickoff return to open the second half which set up a third score in the win.

The defending Class 4A state champion Aggies of Coach Cody Flournoy won their 20th straight game against Class 4A teams and have scored 40 points or more in 19 of their last 23 games. However, Aggies were holding a slight 13-7 lead at halftime.

Flournoy had plenty of praise for Chapman. He spoke to reporter  Jimmy Wigfield  after the game. “Man, that guy looked explosive,” Flournoy said. “I wouldn’t kick it to him no more. That might be the only game this year that he gets any balls kicked to him because now everybody else knows…He’s got elite speed.”

Chapman won the Class 4A 100 and 200-meter races at last spring’s AHSAA state track championships and anchored the Aggies’ winning 4x100 relay team. He ran a prelim-best time of 10.69 seconds in the 100 meters and won the finals clocking 10.78. His 21.81 time won the 200-meter dash, and Jackson’s 42.14 time in the 4x100 relay set a new Class 4A state record. The Aggies finished fourth in the state with 43 points – and Chapman had a hand in earning 30 of those points.

“He’s never really returned balls for us,” Flournoy added. “This year he’s been asking to, so we put him back there. And, hey, it makes us great coaches out there.”

Coosa Christian’s Long led the Conquerors (3-2) to a 56-26 victory over Susan Moore in Class 2A, Region 6 with an 11-of-13 passing effort for 365 yards and seven touchdowns. The sophomore quarterback, coached by Rush Propst, finished with 478 total yards. His leading receiver was Kylen Johnson, who snagged four passes for 172 yards and three TDs. Grayson Malone had three catches for 100 yards and one TD, and LO.J. Mostella had two receptions for 85 yards and  two scores.  Hayden Palmer had the  remaining TD catch. Placekicker Jorge Castellano was also 8-of-8 on extra-point kicks.

Propst said, “It was an awesome performance by our quarterback. I’ve seen a lot of performances out of young quarterbacks, but this one steals the show.”

Diaz, the junior placekicker for Coach Adam Hunter at Valley High School, was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goal tries in last week’s 34-21 Class 5A, Region 4 victory over Marbury. His four field goals are tied with 19 other kickers for third most in a single game all-time in the AHSAA. The state record (6) was set by McGill-Toolen Catholic kicker Jack O’Neil in an 18-16 win over Theodore in 2024. Five others have kicked five field goals in a single game with the most recent, Crosby Gray of Spain Park, in a 15-14 victory over Thompson in 2015.

O’Neil and Gray each scored all their teams’ points in those two wins. Other placekickers with five field goals in a single game include Sage Ledbetter of Auburn (2013(, Josh Woodard of Decatur (2001), Tim Rogers of Mountain Brook (1990), and Ricky Beck of Geneva (1970).

Fairhope senior placekicker Grant Thompson drilled two field goals, including a school-record 55-yarder, in a 47-9 victory over Robertsdale in Class 7A, Region 1. He was also perfect on five extra-point tries. His 55-yard kick is the longest this season in the AHSAA and is tied for sixth longest in AHSAA history with five other kickers.

Current Auburn University kicker Alex McPherson of Fort Payne set the state record in 2021 with a 61-yard field goal made from a snap, hold and kick. Sage Ledbetter of Auburn High School also kicked a 61-yard field in 2015 on a free kick. McPherson, who also had field goals of 57 and 56 yards in high school, was the last kicker to boot a 55-yarder in an AHSAA game – with a kick versus North Jackson in 2021.
