Coach Hal Wasson informed the ALFCA that because of some personal issues he will not be able to attend and present at the ALFCA Convention. We know that Coach Wasson was very much looking forward to coming to Alabama. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family and hope that he can join us next year.
ALFCA Director Jack Wood quickly replaced Coach Wasson on the program with newly appointed South Alabama coach Steve Campbell. The 51 year old Campbell is no stranger to the state, having played center for Troy on their 1987 national championship team.
Still want to attend the ALFCA Convention? No problem. You can register Thursday afternoon at the door and still see the Thursday line up of Coach Campbell, Notre Dame’s OC Chip Long, and Alabama’s Scott Cochrane and Nick Saban. The convention slate is set to begin at 5:30 PM.
There are still hotel rooms available in the Montgomery downtown area near the Embassy Suites. The Hampton Inn, the Renaissance Hotel across the street and the Doubletree a few blocks away all have rooms left at competitive prices for Thursday and Friday nights.
On Friday morning, culture and leadership speaker Brian Kight has changed spots with Tommy Turberville. Coach Tuberville’s “Masters” session will begin at 8:30 AM, Auburn’s Gus Malzahn and Chip Lindsey will speak at 9:30 AM and Kight will take the stage at 10:50 AM.
After lunch, the convention will break up into smaller groups with coaches speaking on different positions, offense and defense. At 3:30 the ALFCA will come into general session to hear presentations from the AHSAA and to discuss specific topics of interest to high school football in the state of Alabama. The session will conclude with drawings for door prizes.
The convention will end with the Coach of the Year Banquet at 11:15 AM Saturday morning at the Embassy Suites Hotel.
