Schools Making End of School Coaching Hires

Schools are trying to get their head coach on board before summer begins, and several have made coaching hires as May draws to a close.

Todd Ginn is the new head coach at Alexandria. He replaces Frank Tucker who resigned at the end of April. Ginn is the son of the Alexandria’s late Hall of Fame basketball and football coach Larry Ginn. He had been teaching at Alexandria High School and spent nine years as the head basketball coach at Gadsden State Community College where he, his father and brothers had all played basketball.  Although this hire is a little unusual, it has two factors important in hiring coaches.  Ginn come from a coaching family and it stays with the school trend of staying within the Valley Cub family for its head football coaches as well.

Tanner has used another successful factor to hire their new head coach- hire an assistant from a highly successful program.  He is Russellville graduate Oscar Bonds who had spent 13 seasons at Piedmont, where the Bulldogs have captured three state titles and made two semi final appearances.  Bonds replaces Maurice Belser who went 3-8 last season.

“I felt like it would be a great opportunity,” Bonds said on al.com of Tanner, which has a history of strong football. “I want to help them get back to where they once were.”

Nick Flanagan is leaving the Randolph School to take over the football and baseball program at Shoals Christian. In the five years Randolph had resumed playing football prior to Flanagan’s arrival, Randolph had not had a winning season.  But Flanagan had three winning seasons and won 19 games and made two playoff appearances. “I can’ t thank Randolph enough. They gave a 25-year-old who had never even been a coordinator a head coaching job,” Flanagan said on al.com.

Michael Parker leaves the offensive coordinator’s job at Hatton to take over the Clements program. He had previously been head coach at Phil Campbell and Speake, as well as an assistant At Winston County, Madison County, Hazlewood and Lawrence County. Clements has not had a winning season since 2009.
