Playoff Positions at Stake in Classes 5A-7A

Class 5A

Seven of the eight region champions have been decided in Class 5A.

Region 1-Vigor’s victory last week over St. Paul’s made them the region champion.  Quite a comeback after losing their first three games of the season. St. Paul’s gets second place. Jackson plays at Citronelle this Friday.  The winner takes third place. If Jackson loses, they take 4th because they beat Williamson. If Citronelle loses, they are out of the playoffs and Williamson takes the fourth spot since they beat Citronelle earlier in the season.

Region 2- Carroll of Ozark is the champion, still undefeated at 8-0. Eufaula should end up second, with Charles Henderson third and Greenville fourth.

Region 3- Demopolis is the champion of Region 3.  Calera, Central Tuscaloosa and Marbury are the other three playoff teams.  Calera and Marbury play this week.  Best guess is that Calera will be second, Central captures third and Marbury gets the fourth seed.

Region 4- This region is easy. Defending state champion Beauregard is first, Central Clay County is second, Sylacauga third and Talledega fourth.

Region 5- Briarwood Christian is champion of this region, still undefeated at 8-0. Wenonah and St. Clair County play Friday night and the winner takes second place and the loser gets third seed. Pleasant Grove has already secured the fourth place spot.

Region 6- The winner of the Mortimer Jordan (5-0) and Hayden (4-1) game Friday is the region champion and the loser falls to second place. West Point (3-2) plays Curry (2-3) Friday. If West Point wins, they get third and Corner (3-3) takes fourth.  If Curry upsets West Point, there is a three way tie for the third and fourth playoffs spots.

Region 7- Etowah is the region winner at 6-0 and plays Scottsboro Friday. Guntersville beat Alexandria last week taking second place. Alexandria, Crossville and Scottsboro are all still in the playoff hunt, with Alexandria and Crossville playing Friday. Chances are that an Alexandria win makes them third, a Crossville win makes them third. Scottsboro must upset Etowah to force a tie.

Region 8- Mae Jemison is champion and Brooks is second. Lee Huntsville is third with a victory of St. John Paul II who has not won a game. East Limestone, Lawrence County and Russellville could end up in a three way tie for the fourth spot.

Class 6A

Six of the eight regions already have champions.

Region 1- This nine team region runs until the final week of the season. The Spanish Fort Toros are in the drivers seat to be the region winner. Daphne should end up second. Baldwin County, Saraland, Blount and LeFlore are all still in the running for third and fourth.

Region 2- Park Crossing gave Sidney Lanier their first loss last week and won the region championship. If Stanhope Elmore upsets Lanier and Carver beats Russell County, there will be a thres way tie for the other three spots. If Lanier wins, they are second and Carver is probably third with Stanhope Elmore fourth.

Region 3- This one is hotly contested. Opelika upset undefeated Wetumpka last week. If Benjamin Russell beats Wetumpka, they are champion. If they lose, you could very well have a three way tie for the top spot with Opelika, all with 5-1 records. If Pelham beats Opelika, they could sneak in as the third seed, instead of fourth place.

Region 4- Hillcrest Tuscaloosa is champion of Region 4. McAdory is going to be second and Paul Bryant third. A Bessemer City win or a Northridge loss puts Bessemer in the playoffs. If not, Northridge sneaks in the door.

Region 5- Homewood’s victory over Shades Valley made them the region victor. Ramsay took the second spot and Shades Valley is third. A Jackson Olin win vs. Parker makes them the fourth seed. If Jackson Olin loses, Hueytown gets the playoff spot.

Region 6- Pinson Valley is the region champion. A good Clay Chalkville team won second place. Look for Gardendale to be the third place team and Carver Birmingham the fourth seed.

Region 7- This one is wrapped up. Oxford won the region championship with its 32-0 victory over Pell City.  Pell City is the second place team. Cullman has third place and Albertville fourth place by beating Fort Payne last week.

Region 8- Austin beat Muscle Shoals last week to remain unbeaten and win the region. Muscle Shoals takes second place and Athens has the third spot locked up and Florence get fourth place.

Class 7A

Looks as though Region 1 and Region 3 have championship games coming up in the next two weeks.

Region 1- This nine team region will not be decided until the final week of the season. Fairhope and McGill are on a collision course for the region championship next week. Davidson is in the drivers seat to be third. Theodore, Foley and Murphy are battling for the fourth playoff spot.

Region 2- Central Phenix City is the Region 2 champion. An Auburn victory over Jeff Davis makes the Tigers second. But a loss creates a three way tie with Lee Montgomery and Jeff Davis.

Region 3- Thompson (8-0) and Hoover (7-1) play this week in one of the biggest games of the year to decide first and second place in Region 3. Mountain Brook has third place wrapped up and Spain Park is a very good fourth place finisher.

Region 4- Hewitt Trussville is the region winner with Bob Jones second. Sparkman has taken third place. The final playoff spot goes to the winner of Gadsden City and Huntsville.
