Coaches will be glad to know that there are no significant rule changes for the 2020 high school football season. The NFHS rules committee met in Indianapolis on January 12-14th. Most suggested rule changes deal with uniform items. There is a proposal to allow players to wear play cards on their belts, as it is legal in all other levels of football. The rules committee will met again in mid January to vote on the changes, and ALFCA will keep you up on the changes.
On the same note- if you think your opinion never matters, you are wrong. The NFHS sends out a questionnaire at the end of football season and the AHSAA reminds all football coaches about it. Chances are you got an email around Thanksgiving. The committee does take the opinion of the coaches seriously so if you don’t care for a rule or would like to see something changed- speak up!
Alabama lost a high school football legend on January 22nd with the passing of former Sylacauga and Austin coach Tom Calvin. A veteran of World War II, Coach Calvin played at the University of Alabama, was a championship coach, a member of the AHSAA Coaches Hall of Fame and had received the ALFCA Lifetime Achievement Award. A native of Athens, Coach Calvin was 93 years old.
Patrick Nix was named head coach at Central Phenix City on January 14th, replacing Jamey Dubose who had resigned to take the head job at Lowndes County in Georgia. Nix won 6A state championships at Pinson Valley in 2017 and 2018, but fell short of a 3 peat when his Indians were knocked off by eventual champion Oxford in the 2019 semi finals.
Six members of the San Francisco 49ers and one of the Kansas City Chiefs are former Alabama high school football players that were on the rosters for the Super Bowl last Sunday. The players were linebacker Kwon Alexander of Oxford, defensive end Dee Ford of St. Clair County, wide receiver Jordan Matthews of Madison Academy, quarterback Nick Mullens of Spain Park and safeties Jaquiski Tartt and Jimmie Ward of Davidson in Mobile on the 49ers and linebacker Reggie Ragland of Bob Jones in Madison on the Chiefs. Tartt and Ward actually played on the same team at Davidson.
There were actually 64 Alabama high school players on all NFL rosters in 2019, the highest number per capita in the country.
The ALFCA Convention had over 750 participants this year, an all time high. Look for that number to increase at next year’s convention, scheduled for the last full weekend in January, 2021.
