Thanks to David Holtsford of the AHSAA for this week's football spotlight performances

MONTGOMERY – Record-setting performances in high school football can happen on any night …. And in any game. Just ask the folks in Cullman County who attended last week’s 74-41 Holly Pond win over Hanceville. In that wild game, Boston Gibbs turned in the performance of his career with 280 yards rushing, seven touchdowns rushing and five two-point conversions. Gibbs earned this week’s AHSAA Football Spotlight with a sensational performance for the Broncos (1-1). He edged two other outstanding rushing efforts by Randolph County’s Mo Winston, who led the Tigers to a 64-50 win over Central Coosa, and Ryder Gipson of Fyffe, who helped the Red Devils beat Pisgah 60-28. Holly Pond coach Will McDaniel, in his second season as the Broncos’ head coach, directed Holly Pond to a 4-6 record last season in very tough Class 3, Region 8. His team finished the season averaging 32.4 points per game and yielded 33.0 points each week. The Broncos (1-1), with two games in the book this season, have scored 398 points in 12 games for McDaniel and yielded 396 during his head-coaching tenure. One reason for the surge on offense is Gibbs, a senior who helped his team tie the school’s scoring record (74) last week. The record was set in 2024 with a 74-36 win over the same Cullman County rivals. Gibbs, lining up at quarterback, completed 4-of-7 passes for 135 yards and one TD and also connected on two 2-point conversion passes. The multi-talented Gibbs also rushed 17 times for 280 yards and seven touchdowns. He tacked on five 2-point conversions with quarterback keepers – and had two passing. He had a hand in seven two-point plays. He also had one kickoff return for 17 yards, and on defense, he had four tackles including two sacks. One sack forced a fumble which Holly Pond recovered and converted the turnover into a TD a few plays later. He finished with 417 total yards, accounted for eight touchdowns, scored 52 points himself and accounted for 60 of Holly Pond’s 74 points. Miguel Garcia also contributed in a big way –especially on the special teams. He rushed for 85 yards on four carries had scored one rushing TD. He also retuned two kickoff returns for 92 yards, including a 74-yard return for a TD. He caught two passes for 90 yards and one TD – thrown by Gibbs. Garcia finished with 267 all-purpose yards and two TDs. Garcia also recorded seven tackles with one sack. The final numbers for Holly Pond were 74 points – all scored in the first three quarters – with 563 yards total offense. His team rushed for 428 yards and eight TDs on 32 plays and passed for 135 yards and another offensive TD. For the night, Holly Pond had 10 TDs and seven 2-point conversions to account for the school’s record-tying effort. The 115 points scored by both teams rank the total points tied for 15th most all-time according to the AHSAA Record Book online. Winston, Randolph County High School’s outstanding running back, had 29 carries for 373 rushing yards and six touchdowns – and also scored a seventh touchdown on a 17-yard pass reception as the Tigers (2-0) outscored Central Coosa 64-50. That total point production by both teams rank tied for 16th all-time. In two games this season, Winston has gained 636 yards on 42 carries with 10 touchdowns. He has 12 total TDs counting his pass reception last week and a kickoff return for a score in the Randolph County’s first win of the season. Fyffe’s Gipson led the Red Devils (1-1) to a 60-28 victory over Pisgah with 368 yards rushing and seven touchdowns on 19 carries. His scoring runs covered 1, 1, 4, 7, 60, 87 and 52 yards as Fyffe (1-1) delivered career coaching victory 361 for head coach Paul Benefield. Gipson’s performance came on the heels of the Red Devils’ season-opening 35-6 loss to Maplesville in the AHSAA Kickoff Classic season opener. That 29-point defeat was the biggest margin in a loss for Fyffe in 329 games – dating back 27 seasons to 1998 when Clay County beat Fyffe in the first round of the state playoffs 48-7.
Other top performances reported from last week’s prep football action include:
MILESTONES
TRENT SEABORN, THOMPSON: The Warriors’ junior quarterback, who went over 7,000 career passing yards last week, completed 38-of-56 passes for 362 yards and three touchdowns in Thompson’s 24-23 overtime loss to Grayson (GA). His 56 passes attempted rank ninth most in a single game in the AHSAA Record Book, tying him with St. Michael Catholic junior Gunner Rivers (2023) and current Sylacauga head coach Chris Smelley (2005). Smelley’s effort came in the Class 1A state finals against Brantley in a 43-31 loss in a state-record passing effort (29-of-56 passing, 565 yards) that season. Rivers, now a junior, was 39-of-56 for 356 yards and three TDs in a 41-20 loss to Gulf Shores when he was a freshman. The state record for pass attempts (68) was set by Northview of Dothan’s Robert Nomberg in 1987 in a 37-of-68 performance good for 379 yards and three TDs in a 33-23 loss to Greenville. Seaborn’s 38 completions ranks tied for third with Piedmont’s Cole Wilson in last season’s 30-28 playoff win over Fyffe and Westminster Christian’s Brian Park. Wilson was 38-of-54 for 388 yards and three TDs, and Park was 38-of-62 for 447 yards in a 2008 win over Red Bay. Tyler Caldwell of Cullman and James Raines of Berry in Fayette County rank 1-2 in completions. Caldwell was 52-of-61 in a win over Mountain Brook in 2008, and Raines was 39-of-44 in a 61-14 loss to Pickens County in 2016. The Thompson quarterback became just the 33rd quarterback in AHSAA history to surpass 7,000 career passing yards – and he still has the rest of 2025 and his senior year in 2006 remaining. He is now 564-of-881 passing with 7,088 yards and 74 career TDs. More importantly, he has led the Warriors of Coach Mark Freeman to two 7A state titles and one runner-up finish in the last three seasons.
MARS HILL DELIVERS DOUBLE WHAMMY: Seniors Jaxon Penn and Hudson Higgins each rushed for more than 200 yards as the Panthers (2-0) downed Class 5A Russellville 47-19. It marked the first time in school history that two running backs rushed for more than 200 yards in the same game for the Panthers. Penn picked up 207 yards rushing on 18 carries and scored two touchdowns with a long run of 67 yards for one of his touchdown runs. He also recorded seven tackles and an interception on defense. Higgins rushed for 216 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries with one TD run of 85 yards and also had seven tackles and an interception on defense. He returned the pick 40 yards for his fourth TD of the game for Mars Hill Bible (2-0).
ROLLIE PINTO, PIEDMONT: Piedmont’s senior receiver who set the single-season state record last season with 1,826 yards receiving on 108 catches, caught five passes for 89 yards and TDs of 32 and 9 yards in last week’s 43-0 victory over Saks in Class 3A, Region 6 win. Quarterback Cole Austin was 13-of-17 passing overall with 177 yards and the two TDs to Pinto.
LANDYN SMITH, ST. CLAIR COUNTY: Completed 26-of-39 passes for 335 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Saints to a 42-28 win over defending Class 5A state champion Montgomery Catholic to snap a 44-game regular-season winning streak. Smith and his teammates became first team since 2020 to hand the Knights a regular-season loss since Montgomery Academy beat their city rivals 32-21 in the sixth week of the season. His favorite targets were junior Joshua Douthard and senior Tra’vell Jones. Douthard had 11 catches for 135 yards and four TDs, and Jones caught six passes for 106 yards and one TD – albeit a 50-yard strike. Smith has led the St. Clair County (2-0) this season with 42 completions in 60 pass attempts for 611 yards and nine touchdowns. His pass completion percentage is 70.0%. He was 159-of-269 passing last season for 2,583 yards and 39 touchdowns. He went over 400 yards three times in 2024 – including his last two games in the Saints 5-5 season. He was 17-of-21 in a season-ending 55-21 win over rival Ashville, finishing with 403 yards and eight touchdowns. VALLEY’S DIAZ BOOTS 5 FIELD GOALS: Junior kicker Santiago Diaz nailed 5-of-5 field goals last week to score 15 points in the Rams’ 37-21 win over Smiths Station. Diaz now has kicked 7-of-8 field goals on the season. His 5 field goals in one game ties five other place-kickers before him for second place in the AHSAA Football Record Book online. Jack O’Neil of McGill-Toolen Catholic holds the record (6) in an 18-16 win over Theodore last season. He scored all 18 of his team’s points. Those with five made field goals in a single game include Crosby Gray of Spain Park in a 15-14 win over Thompson in 2015; Sage Ledbetter of Auburn in a 45-18 win over Jeff Davis in 2013; Josh Woodard of Decatur in a 15-0 victory over Grissom in 2001; Tim Rogers of Mountain Brook in a 21-7 victory over Huffman in 1990; and Ricky Beck of Geneva in a 15-0 victory over Pike County in 1970.
