Curtis Setting Milestones in Midst of Another Playoff Run

UMS Wright’s Terry Curtis has his team in the middle of another playoff chase which is pretty common for the Bulldogs. But this year Curtis is in the midst of setting some personal records as he does so.

On November 16th, UMS Wright defeated Trinity 48-7 to give Curtis his 300th coaching victory.  The 300th win group is a small club with Buddy Anderson, Jamie Riggs, and Glenn Daniel the only other coaches to win 300 AHSAA football games.

“To win 300 games is really a tribute to a lot of people – a lot of coaches, a lot of players, a lot of administrators. Our kids play hard. Right now, it’s just kind of surreal. I’m sure when I’m out of it, I’ll look back and say, ‘Man that was pretty good.’ Right now, I’m just worried about the next opponent,” Curtis said on

Last Friday night his Bulldog team survived another playoff round when UMS Wright beat American Christian 21-19 when the Patriots missed a last second 43 yard field goal. That win put him within one victory of tying the all time AHSAA playoff win record. Jamie Riggs owns that mark with 69 victories.

His UMS Wright squad is two victories away from his 7th state championship but faces a tough Andalusia team this week that has gotten hot at the end of the season.

Don’t expect Curtis to slow down anytime soon. He serves on the AHSAA Central Board of Control as well as president of the Alabama Football Coaches Association.  Before the season he expressed his sentiments toward retirement.

“The players keep me young,” he said. “I like being around them. All my friends are coaches. If I retired I would have to make a whole new set of friends. I hardly know my next-door neighbors.”
