Austin’s High School’s Asa Martin was named the the state of Alabama’s Mr. Football by the Alabama Sportswriters Association at its banquet in Montgomery.
Martin rushed for 2,228 yards on only 198 carries for a gaudy 11.2 yards per carry. He also scored 33 touchdowns. His Austin Bear team went 12-1 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the state playoffs. Martin caught 20 passes for 399 yards and two scores, threw two touchdown passes and also played cornerback.
Martin also was named the Class 6A Back of the Year during the ASWA Player of the Year Luncheon at the Renaissance Hotel in Montgomery. The event was sponsored by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association.
