Head Football Coach Al Earnest is leaving his Washington County job to work with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in the Mobile area. Coach Earnest will leave Chatom on May 30th to begin his new position.
“I believe our mission work is a calling,” Earnest said in an al.com article. “This is an opportunity that Dennis Hayford (FCA Director) and I have talked about on a number of different occasions. Everything came to fruition over the last few weeks as far as the specifics.”
Earnest had been a long time assistant coach and coordinator in the Mobile and Baldwin County area before taking the Washington County job in 2015. His first squad went 10-3 and made it to the quarterfinals of the Class 2A playoffs. Last season he went 6-4.
The experience of his time in Chatom has been great for him. “The people here have been great. They have been incredibly supportive. My wife and I will treasure the time we spent here,” he said.
FCA Director Dennis Hayford said on al.com, “Al knows Mobile coaches. He will visit schools, set up Bible studies, do ministry with coaches. He will work with me on our camps in the summer and will obviously play a big role in our FCA event during Reese’s Senior Bowl week.”
Earnest plans to start working with FCA early next month but would not rule out a return to coaching. “You never say never but I want to focus my energy and effort on this phase of my life as far as fulfilling the mission to reach out to coaches and athletes and spread the word of faith.”
