MONTGOMERY –  Week 2 of the AHSAA prep football season exploded last week with record-setting offensive performances ranging from Class 1A all the way through Class 7A.

Among the individuals that turned in career-high performances were Class 2A Susan Moore High School sophomore quarterback Sam Garrison; Class 1A quarterback and receiver Blaize Wakefield and Kane Rushing; and Class 7A Dothan’s entire offensive team – led by running backs A.J. Alexander and Sirlathian Meadows.

For their efforts, all share in the AHSAA Football Spotlight for Week 2 of the 2025 football season.

Susan Moore’s Garrison led the Bulldogs to a 66-50 victory over Cold Springs with a record-setting nine touchdowns accounted for and 535 total yards. He was 8-of-13 passing for 319 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed for 222 yards and four TDs on 15 rush attempts.

For good measure, the Bulldogs’ quarterback, coached by Wes Patterson, also converted five 2-point conversions. His 64 points accounted for rank second in the AHSAA all time. His nine TDs accounted for tie for second behind the record holder Brayden Kyle of Decatur Heritage, who accounted for 11 in a 76-60 win over Ragland in 2021.

Lucas Beard was Garrison’s main target. Beard hauled in six receptions for 265 yards and four TDs. His longest was a 70-yard strike. Garrison rushed for 1,833 yards and 18 TDs as a freshman for Susan Moore. He now has 2,314 career rushing yards and 25 TDs, 1,690 career passing yards and 22 TDs with much of his prep career still ahead of him.

Junior quarterback Blaize Wakefield of Class 1A Hubbertville (2-0), coached by Caleb Hynds, turned in the best passing performance in school history in a 64-33 victory over South Lamar in Class 1A, Region 5. Wakefield completed 21-of-31 passes attempted, ending the game with seven touchdown passes thrown and 489 passing yards. His favorite target was Kane Rushing, who grabbed seven pass receptions for 280 yards and five TDs, which ranks tied for second in the AHSAA Record Book.

Jack Lakey grabbed eight passes for 82 yards, and Cole Brand snagged two for 80 yards. Tyler Stricklin had 13 rush attempts in the game for 124 yards and two TDs. Wakefield’s passing yardage ranks tied for 22nd all-time in the AHSAA.

Rushing’s 280 receiving yards ranks 21st all-time behind all-time leader Chris Simpson of LaFayette (412 yards in 2000). Simpson had 20 receptions in his performance versus Alabama Christian in that game played 25 years ago.

The AHSAA state record for TD receptions in a single game (6) has been accomplished by three receivers. Receivers with six TD receptions include JaMichael Willis of Gardendale in a 51-26 win over Bessemer City in 2010; David Morrison of Fayette County’s Berry High School in a 54-6 victory over Akron in 2009; and Westbrook Christian’s Brandon Greer, who snapped six TD passes from Brodie Croyle in a win over Donoho in 1998.

And at Dothan last week, Wolves running backs A.J. Alexander and Sirlathian Meadows delivered a dynamic one-two punch, combining for 480 rushing yards and seven touchdowns as Dothan (3-0) downed Enterprise 69-28 in the Class 7A, Region 2 opener for both teams.

Alexander, a senior who has committed to the University of North Alabama, had 20 carries for 241 yards and three touchdowns. Meadows, a junior, Rn for 239 yards and four TDs pm 13 carries. Alexander also caught two passes for 18 yards.

Thanks to a report from Dothan Eagle sportswriter David Mundee, on the night, Dothan, coached by Jed Kennedy, rolled up 664 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns on the ground. Sam Broadaway added 69 yards passing, giving the Wolves 733 total yards, which rank as the third most in AHSAA history, according to the AHSAA Record Book online, while the 664 rushing yards total is fourth most in state history. Both are Class 7A state records.

Dothan, which merged with Northview in 2019 to form a new school, set a school record for points with 69, surpassing its previous high of 66 against Smiths Station in 2023. It’s also the most points scored against an Enterprise team, moving past the previous high of 57 by Auburn in 2010, and ranks as the most scored by any team – Enterprise or an opponent – on an Enterprise high school football field, surpassing 64 points by Enterprise against Fort Walton Beach (FL) in 2021.

Enterprise and Dothan’s current school have played each year since 2019 with the Wildcats holding a 4-3 edge. The Enterprise-Dothan series, however, was first played in 1913 one year after the original Dothan High School started playing football. Those two teams met 88 times with the series ending with the formation of the new DHS in 2019. Enterprise held a 46-39-3 edge in that series.   Other top performances reported from Week 2 games included:

His brother Bert Newton is in his second season as head coach at Class 6A Hartselle, where his team is 2-0 on the year and 11-3 overall. The Newton family is considered one of the top prep coaching families in the AHSAA. Bob Newton, who was inducted into the AHSAA Sports Hall of Fame in 2007, spent 33 years coaching at Homewood with the last 11 as head coach. He is the winningest football coach in that school’s history.
