Five of the eight region champions in 1A have been decided, but most of the other playoff spots are still up for grabs. Only three of the races have champions right now in 2A. Here is where they stand after last Friday night’s games (10/20/17).
1A Region 1- Sweet Water has the first place seed. Marengo, Linden and Millry are all presently in a three way tie for second. A.L. Johnson could sneak into the picture if they defeat Millry Friday night.
Region 2- If Georgiana beats Houston County Friday night, they are champion. A loss to Houston will almost certainly create a three way tie for first with Brantley. If Pleasant Home beats Red Level Friday night, they will be the fourth place team.
Region 3- This region is pretty simple. Maplesville is first and Isabella took second when they beat Notasulga last Friday night. The winner of Notasulga and Highland Home looks to take third and the loser is probably fourth.
Region 4- Wadley is the #1 seed here with Talledega County Central taking second. Ragland already has the nod for third place. The winner of Winterboro-Victory Christian Friday night gets fourth place.
Region 5- Pickens County (7-1) is first with South Lamar (7-2) second. Marion County, Holy Spirit, Berry and Hubbertville are fighting for the third and fourth spots, all with 2-3 region records.
Region 6- This is another easy region to figure. Spring Garden and Cedar Bluff meet Friday night at Spring Garden for the region championship. The loser gets second. Woodville and Coosa Christian are both tied with 2-2 region records. They also meet Friday night. The winner gets third and the loser is the fourth seed.
Region 7- Lynn has had a great year (9-0) but must still defeat Decatur Heritage to avoid a possible three way tie with Decatur Heritage and Addison. If they win, Addison is second and Decatur Heritage is third. If Lynn loses to Decatur Heritage, the three way tie could go deep into the tie breakers. The Sumiton Christian-Meek game this week looks to decide the fourth playoff spot.
Region 8- Hackleburg is the champion of Region 8. Cherokee, Waterloo and Phillips are battling for the other three spots. Look for Cherokee to end up second, Phillips third and Waterloo fourth when the dust settles Friday night.
Class 2A
Region 1- St. Luke’s is champion of Region 1. Leroy plays J.U. Blackshear this week for second place. A Blackshear win makes Leroy third. If Blackshear loses, they will be tied with the winner of Chickasaw and Southern Choctaw. This could make them third or fourth. Stay tuned on this one.
Region 2- Ariton won the region with their 55-12 defeat of previously undefeated Abbeville. Abbeville get second place. Geneva County will probably get third and Samson fourth.
Region 3- Luverne’s 20-4 win over Elba creates a three way tie at the top with Goshen. It appears to stay that way until the last week of the season when the schools lock up with non region opponents. New Brockton gets fourth place.
Region 5- Lanett has been terrific this year (9-0) but must defeat Lafayette (7-1) this week to claim the region championship. The loser is the second seed. Reeltown has the third seed sewn up. If Vincent beats Ranburne, they get the fourth playoff spot. But a Ranburne win throws it into a three way tie that will take the final week to unravel.
Region 6- As expected, defending champion Fyffe is undefeated and wins the region. Sand Rock has wrapped up second and has a 6-2 record. Westbrook Christian and Ider play each other this week for third and fourth.
Region 7- Cleveland’s win over Tarrant created a three way tie with Falkville. It will likely take the next two weeks to sort it out. Tanner and Winston County are currently tied for fourth. A Winston County win or a Tanner loss makes Winston the fourth place team.
Region 8- Sulligent (7-1) and Lamar County (6-2) look to play for first and second place this week. Mars Hill has locked up third place with Sheffield taking the fourth seed.
