In the mountain air of Blount County, football is still built the old way—on repetition, responsibility, and trust.

At Appalachian, Coach Johnathan Beard has become the rare assistant who carries two clipboards and one steady voice: offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator.

In 2025, the Eagles didn’t just win; they made history—11 victories, a record-setting year, and an identity that was equal parts tempo and toughness. Appalachian scored 41 points a night while holding opponents to just over 14, pairing a top scoring offense with a top scoring defense in Class 1A.

But the real story is how Coach Beard gets it done. “He pushes us to hold us accountable,” said senior guard Eli Beard, “and doesn’t sugarcoat anything.” Senior lineman Erik Wolf echoed the same theme—hard coaching, real support, and the kind of guidance that reaches beyond Friday nights.

Coach Beard is an Appalachian graduate who came back home, first as a volunteer, then as a coach who kept building—position by position—until the whole staff could lean on him. Head Coach Ernie Willingham summed it up best: good coaches are common; good men who are good coaches are not. With his wife Allison and three daughters at home, he models the same thing he demands: do the work, do it right.
