Three Outstanding Coaches Selected as Winners of Lifetime Achievement Awards

The Alabama Football Coaches Association is proud to announce the winners of its coveted Lifetime Achievement Award. These winners were nominated by members of the association, recommended by a committee and approved by the board of directors.
The winners will be honored at the annual ALFCA Coach of the Year Banquet on Saturday, January 31st, at The Embassy Suites in Montgomery. The banquet is part of the three day ALFCA Coaches Conference held each January.
Congratulations to the recipients, who spent a lifetime making a difference in their schools and communities.

Curtis Coleman - An outstanding linebacker at Escambia County High in Atmore, Coleman played at Livingston before starting his coaching career as an assistant with Jerry Partridge at Huffman. He then served 23 years as head coach at Ensley, Huffman and Shades Valley. His 2000 and 2001 teams at Huffman had undefeated back to back regular seasons. In 2011, Coach Coleman joined the staff of one of his former players, Jerry Hood at Clay Chalkville. He followed Hood to Leeds where he is still works as an assistant. Coach Coleman has served a tenure on the AHSAA Central Board of Control and was the 2023 5A recipient of the AHSAA Making a Difference Award. He has coached over 40 years in the Birmingham area where he is highly respected.

Terry Curtis - A strong advocate for high school football in the state, Terry Curtis has served as a member of the Central Board and President of the Alabama Football Coaches Association for more than a decade. A graduate of Murphy High School and Auburn University, Curtis worked as an assistant at B.C. Rain and Murphy before taking the head coaching job at Shaw in 1989. He returned to Murphy as head coach four years later. In 1999, he took the head coaching position at UMS Wright. Curtis won 8 state championships with the Bulldogs and retired this spring with 361 career wins, second in state history. Coach Curtis has been the face of high school football in Alabama for the past two decades.

Danny Powell - Coach Powell graduated from Leroy High School and Livingston University. He worked in the AISA until the early 1990s when he joined the staff at Clarke County. He eventually returned to Leroy and spent 10 years coaching baseball where he won three state titles. Coach Powell served as an assistant in football where the Bears had great success, winning the 2A Championship in 2004. He became head football coach in 2006 where he won four state titles in five seasons. Coach Powell went to Jackson in 2011 and went 15-0, winning the 4A title in his first season. Between the two schools, he amassed a streak of 51 region victories in a row. He finished up his career by returning to his AISA roots, coaching at Clarke Prep and Jackson Academy.
