The board of directors of the Alabama Football Coaches Association met on Thursday, July 18th during AHSAA All Star Week for their annual summer meeting. Executive Director Jack Wood and President Terry Curtis called the meeting to order.
Coach Wood introduced the new executive director of the AHSAA, Heath Harmon, who spoke to the board for a few minutes about his upcoming tenure and some of the issues that are on the table for the AHSAA. Next Coach Wood introduced Steve Brown of Coach Safety. This organization provides much needed safety training for youth coaches which is required yearly by the state of Alabama. Brown asked board members to help spread the word to their local communities and the youth football coaches in their area.
Coach Wood then provided a sponsor update as well as a financial update for the ALFCA. Once again, the association is in good financial standing. Executive assistant Jennifer Byrd talked about the membership mail out that goes to every school in the state in August. This year there will be instructions about online membership using a QR code that will be provided in the membership package. Coach Wood praised Jennifer's work on this project and asked coaches to get the word out in their districts.
Coach Wood discussed the ALFCA plans for the Super 7 in Birmingham December 4-6, 2024. The annual social will be held at the Thursday night, December 5th at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, which is near the stadium. The annual ALFCA Super 7 board meeting will be held the following morning, December 6th at 8:30 AM, also at the ASHOF building.
Coach Wood reminded the members of the board that the 2025 AFCA Convention was to be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, January 12th-15th, 2025. The board members will receive a stipend from the association if they attend the conference.
The 20th ALFCA Convention and Coach of the Year Banquet is scheduled for January 23-25, 2025 at the Embassy Suites in Montgomery. Coach Wood asked the board for suggestions for speakers for the convention. President Terry Curtis talked to the board about the Coach of the Year committees to select the award winners for each classification. Coach Curtis reminded the board to talk with members in their district about the Lifetime Achievement nominees as well.
Coach Curtis finished the meeting with a short discussion about some of the issues going on in both the state and on the national high school football scene.
