Minutes from the December ALFCA Board of Directors Meeting

ree

The board of directors of the Alabama Football Coaches Association met Friday, December 5, 2025 at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame board room in Birmingham. This is the annual Super 7 meeting.

ALFCA Executive Director Jack Wood opened the meeting by thanking those in attendance at the ALFCA Super 7 Social the night before. This annual social has always accompanied the Super 7 event whether in Birmingham, Auburn or Tuscaloosa. Next year the Super 7 event is scheduled for the first time in Mobile. The weather limited the attendance, but some 60 coaches were at the social.

All ALFCA Board members were in attendance, as well as past presidents Jamie Riggs and Terry Curtis. Executive secretary Jennifer Byrd was also at the meeting.

He then turned the meeting over to President Richie Busby. Coach Busby spoke to the members about encouraging membership in their districts, and the importance of signing up as many coaches and schools as possible. He asked them to contact schools in their district that have not joined. He told the board members that he understands that some join every year at convention time.

Coach Wood then welcomed new board member Chris Elmore of Fort Payne High School representing District 8. He talked about the board elections at this year's convention. Normally, half of the board members that represent the districts are elected each year at the annual convention. Since we had a snow event at last year's convention and some could not attend, all elections were postponed until January of 2026. Every district will elect their board member this year. The assistant coach positions and minority coach positions are appointed.

Coach Wood stated that the association was in good financial condition. He and the accountant of the association met with President Richie Busby, Vice President Andro Williams and board member Greg Patterson about the finances during the Super 7 event.

The executive director then gave a sponsor update. He said that Hudl had changed owners and no longer wanted to be a sponsor of the ALFCA. He also said he had been contacted by a new company that owns NFHS/Play On that is getting in the online video services like Hudl. Cost much less than Hudl and they will be at the ALFCA Convention in January.

Coach Wood encouraged the members of the board to attend the AFCA Convention in Charlotte. The association offers a $600 stipend to each of the board members to attend. Over the years, the association has studied the AFCA Convention to help make improvements to the ALFCA event.

He reminded the board that our next board meeting would be on Thursday morning, January 29th at the Embassy Suites in Montgomery. That meeting will be held to organize the board assignments at the convention.

Coach Wood then spoke briefly about certain changes that are headed for the AHSAA in the near future. There are issues dealing with public and private schools as well as reclassification. He reminded the board of the ALFCA policies that have served the association well in the past. The board will not support any policy change unless it has unanimous support from the members of the board. With public and private schools being represented on the board, it wouid be impossible to attain such support. He said that the "landscape is changing" and coaches will learn to adapt to whatever happens in the next two years.

Coach Wood then called on past president Terry Curtis who is still serving as president of the AHSAA Central Board to speak to AHSAA issues. Coach Curtis spoke about the lawsuit concerning the Choose Act, the public/private issues as well as reclassification. He also spoke about some of the rule changes or proposals that had been talked about to try and reach some compromise. He reminded the board that these are the same issues that are occurring or have occurred in recent years in other states.

At that point of the meeting, President Richie Busby started the process for selecting the Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year awards. The board members are assigned to work on committees that look at all of the nominations, discuss those candidates and bring the findings to the entire board. The board then votes to select the winners. This procedure was followed in all seven classifications.

After the selections, past president Jamie Riggs, who works with the presentation of the awards at the banquet, gave the board members an information sheet and asked for their help in attaining pictures and biography on the winners. He said that last year the ALFCA did video slideshows of all of the Coach of the Year winners, as well as the scholarship recipients. He said that everyone he had talked to was pleased with the banquet changes from last year.

Coach Busby then assigned board members to each of the winners. These board members will contact these coaches to congratulate them and give them information about the banquet and let them know that they will receiver a letter from Coach Wood.

With their being no other business, the meeting adjourned.
