AHSAA Spotlight Performances for August 20th/21st

Thanks to David Holtsford, Scott Griffin, and the AHSAA for the following spotlight performances from last week's games.

High school football kicked off last Thursday and didn’t end until 48 hours later but there were many eyebrow raising performances on both sides of the football.  The digits on the stat lines across the state were popping off the screen and paper showcasing amazing performances already in the first week of the season.  It all began with the AHSAA Kickoff Classic.

Catching the Eye

Trent Seaborn – Thompson QB: The Alabama commit exploded by completing his first pass on the first play for 64 yards and didn’t stop until posting a 331-yard night on 18-27 passing and four touchdowns as Thompson took down Central-Phenix City 41-14.

Mason McClure – Thompson WR: Four catches for 129 yards for the Warriors.

KG Whatley – Calera QB:  First game as a starter and Whatley showed out with 247 yards passing and three touchdowns as Calera took down Wenonah 24-14.

Barrett Price – Spain Park WR:  This prized recruit turned in 11 catches for 135 yards as the Jags edged Sparkman 17-13.

Dylan Smith – Pelham QB: Panthers are 1-0 for the first time since 2023 as Smith was 30 of 43 for 444 yards and five total touchdowns (four passing and one rush). Pelham outlasted Oak Mountain 45-38.

Montevallo RBs: Caleb Meriweather (10 carries, 135 yds. One TD) and Jaedyn Rutledge (8 att., 217 yds and three TDs).  Bulldogs beat Tarrant 33-7.

Briarwood run game: Avenges 2025 playoff loss to Moody taking down the Blue Devils 35-7 with 260 yards rushing on 48 out of 59 offensive plays.

John Colvin – Mountain Brook QB:  Four total touchdowns (3 rush/1 pass) in Spartans 60-18 dominant win over Hueytown.

Charlie Taafe – Vestavia QB:  The slippery QB had four touchdowns with 178 yards rushing on 18 carries as the Rebels took care of Parker 32-14.

Jack Floyd – Hewitt Trussville QB:  The second coach’s son to play QB for Josh Floyd. The sophomore was 22 of 26 for 360 yards and three TDs in the air while also running for 159 yards and four more TDs (seven total). Jackson Martin was his favorite target with five catches for 165 yards as the Huskies outlasted Auburn 56-42.

Cason Myers – Auburn QB: This talented passer kept Auburn in it with 293 yards on 21 of 28 passing and a TD plus 68 yards rushing with two TDs. 

Sam Garrison – Oneonta QB: Terrific digits with 13 of 20 passing for 188 yards and a TD plus 146 yards running on 25 carries and four touchdowns (five total TDs) as Oneonta squeaks by Pleasant Grove 42-41.

Khristian Perryman – Park Crossing QB: Superb night with 17 of 19 completions for 283 yards and three touchdowns as the Thunderbirds take down Woodlawn 21-8.

Kendrick Able – Theodore RB: Rushed for 176 yards and three touchdowns in Theodore’s win over Davidson 34-20.

Evan Bell – Satsuma RB: Had 11 carries for 184 yards and three TDs and had a 40-yd TD catch as the Gators beat Chickasaw 44-20.  Bell also had five tackles on defense.

Israel Benard – Mobile Christian QB: Threw for 205 yards and four TDs as the Leopards took down McIntosh 36-0. 

Seth Demouey – McGill-Toolen RB: Rushed for 147 yards and two TDs on just 15 carries as the Yellow Jackets beat Foley 52-35.

Major Hudspeth – Gulf Shores QB: Dolphins QB was 20 of 25 for 307 ards and a TD and also ran for a score as Gulf Shores beat Parklane Academy 30-21.

Ray Johnson – Baldwin County QB: Four TDs throwing (241 yds passing) and one rushing for this talented leader as the Tigers beat B.C. Rain 40-22.

TyShawn Sellers – St. Paul’s RB:  Finished with 183 yards rushing on 15 carries and three TDs in a 58-28 win over Alma Bryant.

Thaddeus Wilder – Williamson QB:  Completed 11 of 18 for 239 yards and three touchdowns as Williamson gets past Baker 33-0.

Keton Coffee – Corner QB: Five total touchdowns (3 pass/ 2 rush) with 256 total yards in the 42-0 shutout of Dora.

Joshua Douthard - St. Clair County WR: Caught 6 passes for 203 yards and 3 TDs (70, 12 and 53 yards) in the 34-7 win over Gardendale.

Semaj William – Huffman QB: Led the Vikings offense to the 41-3 win over Hazel Green with 9-of-12 passing for 283 yards and 3 TDs.

Rico Jemison – McAdory QB: Completed 11-of-12 passes for 184 yards and 4 TDs in the 51-6 victory over Lee-Huntsville.

Davey Lawrence – Ramsay QB: Was 12-of-22 passing for 191 yards and 2 TDs, with 8 rushes for 50 yards as well as Jackson Olin falls 35-13 to the Rams.

Marcus Bryant Jr. – Hale County QB: Six touchdowns and 252 total yards as the Wildcats take down Berry 42-22.

Blaize Whitfield – Hubbertville QB/DB: Sparkled on both sides of the ball with 221 yards and three TDs passing and added two interceptions on defense in a tight 28-22 win over University Charter.

Bennett Green – Northside RB: Talented back had 18 carries for 252 yards and four TDs plus added a fumble recovery for a TD in a 49-27 victory over Winfield.

Isaiah Bennett – Sipsey Valley RB:  It took only five carries for Bennett to tally 228 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Marion County 48-12.

Mark Norris – Tuscaloosa Academy QB:  Threw for four TDs and ran for another as the Knights get by Sulligent 33-12.

Sage Bennett - Boaz WR: Caught six passes for 181 yards and two scores from QB Beau Bennett (cousin) who had 280 yards and the two TDs in a 21-14 win over Cullman.

Jordan Lankford – Geraldine RB:  The sophomore RB ran for 162 yards and three TDs in a 54-22 win over Anniston.

Kylen Johnson – Plainview WR/CB:  The 1A state champ in the 300-meter hurdles as a freshman had eight catches for 161 yards and a touchdown, ran for 90 yards and two more scores while also adding an interception as the Bears escape in a 4A playoff rematch over Good Hope 31-24.

Jaymen Mintz – Glencoe QB:  Threw for 248 yards and five TDs in a convincing 35-8 win over Hayden.

Qua McNeal – Jacksonville WR:  Caught three touchdowns in only four catches for 112 yards as the Golden Eagles took down Piedmont 34-8.

Christian Morris – Southside QB:  Was 15 of 19 for 272 yards and three touchdowns in a 30-7 win over Chelsea. 

Zylen Dupree – Gaston RB:  Had 298 total yards (223 rush/75 receiving) and three touchdowns in a 36-12 win over Spring Garden.

Catching the Eye on defense:

John Tatum – Calera CB: Had two takeaways (fumble and interception) in Calera’s 24-14 win over Wenonah.

Lee Steele – Orange Beach LB: Three sacks, five tackles for loss and two deflections in the pass game as the Makos win over T.R. Miller 24-14.

Kar’moniy Gibbs – Leflore OLB: Generated three sacks, a forced fumble and recovered a fumble as the Rattlers rallied to beat Robertsdale 22-16.

Gage Nasworthy – Briarwood MLB: Led a great defensive effort with eight tackles, a sack, tackle for loss, QB pressure and a forced fumble in the 35-7 win over Moody.

Rylan Fleming – Gaston D: Had 14 tackles with four of those going for losses plus two sacks.  Fleming also had a double reverse TD run in the 36-12 win over Spring Garden.
