1A/2A Region Races Heating Up as Playoffs Approach

With three weeks left in the regular season, region races are being determined with big games all across the state. We take a look at Classes 1A/2A and how the races are stacking up as November approaches.

Class 1A

Region 1- Sweet Water has only a loss to 4A Thomasville on the season, but a loss to Millry this week could create a three way tie. Look for Marengo, Millry and Linden to be the other playoff teams.

Region 2- Georgiana defeated Brantley but still must play Houston County who lost to Brantley.  If the Panthers go down, it could create a three way tie at the top. All three teams could make noise in the playoffs. The fourth team looks to be a battle between Kinston, Pleasant Home and Florala.

Region 3- Maplesville looks to be champion with second place going to the winner of this week’s Isabella-Notasulga contest. The winner of Highland Home and Notasulga will likely be the fourth playoff team.

Region 4-Wadley looks to win this region with Talledega Central (2nd), Winterboro (4th) and Ragland (3rd) to be the other playoff teams.

Region 5- Pickens County (6-1) is first with South Lamar (6-2) second. Marion County, Holy Spirit and Hubbertville are fighting for the third and fourth spots.

Region 6- Spring Garden and Cedar Bluff meet next week for the championship with the loser taking second place. Valley Head, Woodville and Coosa Christian are fighting it out for the other two spots.

Region 7- Lynn has had a great year (8-0) but must still defeat Decatur Heritage to avoid a possible three way tie with Decatur Heritage and Addison. The Sumiton Christian-Meek game next week looks to decide the fourth playoff spot.

Region 8- Hackleburg looks to be the champion of this region, with Cherokee, Waterloo and Phillips battling for second, third and fourth.

Class 2A

Region 1-St. Luke’s is the champion (beat Leroy in overtime last week) and Leroy should be second.  J.U. Blackshear, Washington County, Chickasaw and Southern Choctaw are all still alive in the race for third and fourth.

Region 2-Abbeville (7-0) and Ariton (6-1) meet this week for the region championship. The loser gets second place. Geneva County should be third with the winner of the Samson-G.W. Long game taking the final playoff spot.

Region 3-If Luverne beats Elba this week, it will create a three way tie at the top. But an Elba win makes them the champion.  If Elba wins, look for Goshen to be second, Luverne third and New Brockton the fourth place team.

Region 4- Aliceville will be champion.  The winner of the Keith vs. Thorsby game next week will probably be second although a Billingsley win over Thorsby this week and an a Billingsley upset of Aliceville could move them up. But whatever the order, Thorsby, Billingsley and Keith will be the other playoff teams.

Region 5- Lanett has been terrific this year (8-0) but must defeat Lafayette (6-1) to claim the region championship. The winner of Vincent and Reeltown will probably be third and the loser fourth.

Region 6- Fyffe once again dominates this region with Sand Rock probably second. Look for the winner of Ider-Westbrook Christian to claim third. Although Section and Collinville could still make noise, the loser of the Ider-Westbrook game will probably end up fourth.

Region 7- A Cleveland victory against Tarrant will make them champion, but a Tarrant win could create a three way tie with Falkville who beat Cleveland earlier in the season. Winston County should end up fourth.

Region 8- Sulligent and Lamar County look to play for first and second place next week.  Mars Hill looks headed for third place with Sheffield fourth.
